Put Food on the Table and Millions into Local Economies: Myths, Facts, and Changes to FoodShare Wisconsin and SHARE
Appropriate Audience: Social service providers, community organizations, social workers, librarians, people/agencies working with low-income individuals, families, seniors, etc.

At this time of great economic challenges, families are struggling to put food on their tables and are being forced to make tough choices about how to spend their limited resources. Despite record increases in enrollment, Wisconsin ranks a dismal 33rd nationally in FoodShare program participation, the program formerly known as food stamps. Only an estimated 63% of potentially eligible households receive benefits. Additionally, an estimated two thirds of Wisconsin’s eligible seniors are not claiming their benefits. Even among advocates, social workers, and emergency food providers, myths and misconceptions persist about FoodShare.

This interactive workshop seeks to correct myths and ensure that everyone has a clear understanding of general eligibility guidelines and new administration processes. We will also cover strategies that can be used by community members to assist low-income families and individuals by working to remove barriers, reduce stigma and promote participation in this federal program.
